Wildlife Shelter Home

The Wildlife Shelter Home

Full of nooks & crannies and hidey-holes, there are plenty of corners for ladybirds and spiders to huddle in through a cold winter, or for woodlice and snails to hide out on hot summer days. Not only that, but as the wood starts to decay, beetle larvae – and other invertebrates – will be able to munch on the rotten wood to gain the nutrients they need. This high-rise accommodation for creepy-crawlies is easy to make from all your unwanted recycled materials so you could create one for your own garden.
This particular home above was built by children at the RSPB Open day- facilitated by Kate Doubleday

Apologies that the site has not been translated yet- we are currently working on this and hope to have a fully bilingual site up and running as soon as possible – thanks for your patience.

Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens – Gathering

June 29th, 2009

Gerddi Bro Ddyfi Gardens will be hosting a mid Wales gathering this Tuesday 30 June 10.30 am for all those interested in finding out about Community gardens/farm projects. As a member of the Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens we warmly welcome Katie Jones – the Welsh Development Officer – who will be coming along to visit the site for the fist time along with other local member projects.

The FCFCG has been very supportive to us in setting up the gardens and we look forward to welcoming Katie and other members to the event.

There will be a guided tour of the Gardens at 10.30 am and lunch in the park if the weather is fine. This will be a great opportunity to meet and discuss ideas and issues related to community projects.

Scything the meadow

June 26th, 2009

Last week saw a group of us scything the meadow – with fantastic instruction from Bob Shaw. We had a great day – Thank you everyone and thank you so much Bob! We came across a female pheasant sitting proudly on her eggs too.

The wildflower meadow will be a long term project and we know we will have to be patient to achieve our results. All the hay cuttings have been removed to reduce fertility and this spring we have planted cowslips and cuckoo flower.

The Guides’ girl group later planted Ragged Robin and the ‘Get Growing’ team have planted corncockle and oxe-eye daisy. Looking forward to seeing what comes up next year.

Now we have developed our meadow cutting skills (and a few muscles we never realised we had) we will be cutting the meadow again in late summer and sowing Yellow Rattle.

Breathing Places

March 12th, 2009

We’re on the BBC’s Breathing Places web site.

New shed!

March 12th, 2009

We now have a new shed on site for the secure storage of tools etc. We hope to paint it soon with help from the Machynlleth youth club. Thanks to Leigh and Grant for putting it up.

The Get Growing course with Mentro Allan is going well. It’s been running for two weeks now and we’ve prepared some of the land and made bird boxes.

We’ve been given an office in Y Plas by the Mayor, Bob Dunn. In exchange we have to look after the Rose Garden! Thank you Bob!

We’ve received a Tidy Towns grant of about £350. Thanks to them too. This will pay for tools and so on.

Hello world!

February 23rd, 2009

We are a new Community Garden nestled in the Plas Park in Machynlleth. It is a wildlife garden with a stream, a meadow and some Ash trees and a lovely Old Oak tree too.
