Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens – Gathering

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Gerddi Bro Ddyfi Gardens will be hosting a mid Wales gathering this Tuesday 30 June 10.30 am for all those interested in finding out about Community gardens/farm projects. As a member of the Federation of City Farms and Community Gardens we warmly welcome Katie Jones – the Welsh Development Officer – who will be coming along to visit the site for the fist time along with other local member projects.

The FCFCG has been very supportive to us in setting up the gardens and we look forward to welcoming Katie and other members to the event.

There will be a guided tour of the Gardens at 10.30 am and lunch in the park if the weather is fine. This will be a great opportunity to meet and discuss ideas and issues related to community projects.

Scything the meadow

Friday, June 26th, 2009

Last week saw a group of us scything the meadow – with fantastic instruction from Bob Shaw. We had a great day – Thank you everyone and thank you so much Bob! We came across a female pheasant sitting proudly on her eggs too.

The wildflower meadow will be a long term project and we know we will have to be patient to achieve our results. All the hay cuttings have been removed to reduce fertility and this spring we have planted cowslips and cuckoo flower.

The Guides’ girl group later planted Ragged Robin and the ‘Get Growing’ team have planted corncockle and oxe-eye daisy. Looking forward to seeing what comes up next year.

Now we have developed our meadow cutting skills (and a few muscles we never realised we had) we will be cutting the meadow again in late summer and sowing Yellow Rattle.
